Tesco has recalled its own brand cooking salt because it may contain small pieces of plastic.

The exact product being pulled from shelves is the 1.5kg size Tesco British Cooking Salt with the batch code 3200. The supermarket is advising any customer that has purchased this item, not to eat it - instead, you should return it to your closest store for a refund.

No other batch codes are affected by the recall. In a statement published on the recall notice, Tesco said: “We have been made aware that a specific batch of Tesco Cooking Salt 1.5kg may have been contaminated with small pieces of plastic. This could potentially pose a risk if ingested.

“Please do not consume this product and return it to store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required. Tesco apologises to our customers for any inconvenience caused.”

It comes after budget rival Lidl issued a recall for Potts’ Truffle Mayonnaise in 230g size over fears it could be contaminated with Listeria.

Only stock with the best before date of July 2024 and batch code 18823 are affected by the recall. Symptoms of Listeria poisoning include a high temperature, aches and pains, chills, feeling or being sick and diarrhoea.

A recall notice on the Lidl website reads: "Our supplier, Potts Partnership Ltd is recalling the above-mentioned product due to potential contamination of product with listeria monocytogenes."

For all product recalls, you can check the Food Standards Agency and Chartered Trading Standards Institute websites. You should also notice recall notices in stores if they've pulled a product from shelves.

Meanwhile, Asda recently pulled OMV! Mac 'N' No Cheese from shelves because it may contain milk, which is not mentioned on the label. It means this product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.

The affected product comes in a 400g size with the use by dates of: June 1, 2023, June 2, 2023 and June 3, 2023.

Anyone who bought the product and has an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents is warned to not eat it and instead return it to the store.
