Cyclist fights for life after hit-and-run near Birmingham City stadium
A cyclist is fighting for his life after a collision with a car in a hit-and-run close to Birmingham City’s stadium.
The man was given trauma care by paramedics at a busy junction near St Andrew’s before being rushed to hospital.
The driver abandoned the smashed-up car at the scene before fleeing on foot, West Midlands Police said.
A bus stop was shattered by the force of the collision early this morning.
A spokesperson for the force said: “We’re investigating after a serious collision involving a cyclist in Birmingham.
“We were called to the junction of Cattell Road and Templefield Street in Small Heath at around 5.25am today.
“The cyclist has been taken to hospital in a serious condition.
“One car was abandoned at the scene by the driver who left on foot.
“We are examining CCTV and speaking to witnesses as we work to establish the full circumstances of what happened.”
Cops have not made any arrests so far as inquiries continue.
A police cordon was in place at the scene outside the football ground.
An ambulance service spokeswoman said: “We were called to reports of an RTC involving a car and a pushbike at the junction of Cattell Road and Tilton Road in Nechells, Birmingham, at 5.23am and sent three ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor with a critical care paramedic to the scene.
“On arrival, a man, the cyclist, was found in a critical condition.
“He received specialist trauma care before being conveyed under emergency driving conditions to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”
