Reform UK plans to strip Commonwealth citizens of voting rights in Britain

The party, led by Nigel Farage, has also pledged to prevent people from being able to vote if their ability to understand English is "not good enough to understand the electoral rules".

Detailing the plans on GB News, Mr Kruger said it is a "point of principle" that millions of people in Britain temporarily should not be able to vote in local and parliamentary elections.

He said: "It’s not whether it would have an impact on the results, but it’s a point of principle here. There are 2.5 million Commonwealth citizens, not British citizens, here on on visas, temporary work visas, on student visas, on family visas, by definition not attached to our country.

"But they’re here on some temporary basis because of this quirk of our electoral history, and they have the right to vote in parliamentary elections and in local elections, we think that is wrong."

He argued: "We’re talking about hundreds of thousands of people from India, from Pakistan, from Nigeria, all here are on a temporary basis, not because they’re citizens here, but because they’re here for some other reason, often work related.

"So we think it is wrong, we are going to stop that practice, we are going to insist that if you are voting in a British election, it’s because you are a British citizen only."

Asked by host Cameron Walker whether Commonwealth countries such as "Canada, New Zealand and Australia" will also be banned, Mr Kruger agreed.

He responded: "Absolutely. If you’re not a British citizen, if you’re not invested in our country, it’s a very important principle, and it applies to all these amendments that I’ve tabled, the Representation of the People Bill, which is going through Parliament, coming back next week.

"We’re introducing a series of amendments designed to ensure that we have one nation, one electoral system. So yes, all election materials should be in English or Welsh or Cornish if need be."

The Reform MP explained how such a policy would work: "Election material is already policed, you have to register and declare where the material has come from. It will be illegal to issue election material in foreign languages.

"We insist that people should take part in a single election. We’re also banning postal voting except for people in the armed forces or people who are literally unable to vote in person.

"People should be participating in this important ritual, this shared endeavour in our Government, and that needs to be done by a single community of the British people all understanding the language."

Mr Kruger also vowed to crack down on family voting, pledging to make the practice "illegal".

He told GB News: "If you don’t understand the language, if you don’t understand the voting system, if you’re being led through to the voting booth by your elder, your family member, your father or your husband and told how to vote, that should be illegal.

"We’re going to we’re introducing amendments to stop that. We’re insisting on the traditional British model of elections, and you vote on your own. It’s a secret ballot, you’re not coerced by other people. You understand the electoral system that you’re participating in and you’re a British citizen if you do so."

Th Reform policy chief concluded: "These seem essential elemental principles that I suspect people will be surprised to hear we don’t have already.

"But our democracy has been abused over many years, and because of the rate of immigration that we’ve just been discussing, we now have a significant threat to our democracy.

"So Reform is introducing these amendments to change all of that."
