TK Maxx and Homesense will be closing stores over the next few weeks in another blow for the UK high street.

First up, TK Maxx will be closing its Edinburgh site next week due to the landlord pulling the lease.

The last day it will be open to customers is Wednesday, February 15.

Homesense is a subsidiary of TK Maxx which exclusively sells homeware pieces such as ornaments, storage solutions, home decor and plants.

The Homesense Manchester Arndale and Swansea branches will be shutting shop next month as their lease has come to an end.

According to signs put up in the shop's window, the Manchester city centre branch will remain open until March 1.

The Swansea site, located at Parc Fforestfach, will close by the end of next month.

For the Scottish TK Maxx branch, a spokesperson told EdinburghLive that all staff were hoping to be given roles at other TK Maxx or Homesense stores.

However, this was only the retailer's "intention" and the number of people affected has not been announced.

The spokesperson for TK Maxx said: "Our senior managers have been in store supporting the team. We’re currently in consultation with all affected associates and our intention is that all associates will be offered roles in other local TK Maxx or Homesense stores."

A spokesperson for Homesense confirmed to the Manchester Evening News that all Manchester-based staff will be offered roles in nearby TK Maxx and Homesense stores.

There are currently Homesense stores in Altrincham and Trafford, which will remain open for business.

However, the closures at TK Maxx and Homesense come as the chain is set to open new stores in several other locations.

The Welsh Homesense branch will be relocating to the Trostre Retail Park and the company has said that everyone working at the soon-to-be-closed store has been offered roles at the new shop in Llanelli.

TK Maxx will also be opening up in Llanelli as part of the move.

The opening date for the new stores is yet to be confirmed.

Deborah Dolce, group director, TJX Europe told Mirror Money: “We are proud of our continued investment in communities across the country through new store openings, store modernisations and relocations.

"Last year we opened two new stores – a TK Maxx in Bromborough and a Homesense in Altrincham.

"This year, we’re opening another three new TK Maxx stores and a new Homesense store in Stevenage. To meet growing customer demand on tkmaxx.com, we’re also opening a new logistics centre in Crewe which will create jobs for the local community.

"We look forward to bringing new, bright and beautiful TK Maxx and Homesense stores to even more shoppers across the UK and offering great retail careers to those communities.”

TK Maxx, which is a subsidiary of the American group TJX Companies, has 352 stores in the UK and hundreds more operate under the same brand in Europe.

The brand also owns 77 Homesense stores across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
