Shameless' Tina Malone recalls drinking up to '40 gins a day' before going sober

Tina Malone has reflected on her past battles with alcohol - revealing she used to sink up to 40 gin and tonics a night.

The 60-year-old Shamless actress has been through a complete transformation in recent years - having quit alcohol, given up fattening foods, and lost an incredible twelve and a half stone. However, the actress battled alcohol addiction before she turned her lifestyle around.

Tina didn’t think she had a drinking problem, but admits she would easily down dozens of alcoholic drinks per night. But she says she does not miss drinking - having quit alcohol for quarter of a century.

She told Closer magazine: "My biggest vice was always the drink and now I'm 25 year sober. Do I miss it? No I don't.

Her latest comment comes after she previously confessed to the publication: "In those days a typical night out for me would start off with a bottle of champagne at home while I was getting ready, then some spirits.

"I could put away 30 or 40 gin and tonics no trouble, half a bottle of brandy, a bottle of champagne, ten bottles of Beck’s…"

Tina had felt she wasn't a 'stereotypical' alcoholic and didn't recognise the extent of her reliance on drink. However, when a doctor warned her that her alcohol consumption could be a danger to her health, it was the wake-up call she needed and she attended AA meetings.

Tina has since steered clear of alcohol - and has delighted in the fact her body has been transformed in part for the fact she has kicked her old drinking habits, losing more than 12 stone in recent years. Appearing on Loose Women in 2017 while her weight loss journey was underway, Tina admitted that paparazzi shots showing excess skin left by her weight loss left her feeling down.

She explained: "I've done so well. I’ve lost 12 and a half stone… I'm a scouser, I'm hard as nails. Love me or hate me, I'm a bit of a Trojan, but I saw those pap shots and all the wrinkles, and I thought, 'How can you get that far?’"

She also revealed she became a target of online trolls - which also took its toll. She explained: "I'm happy, healthy, eradicated my diabetes and high blood pressure. But I am horrified by the wrinkly skin on my legs, tummy, back, bum etc. I actually have sobbed tonight. But I'm only human, I don't deserve the battering I've had from people… just nasty comments."

Tina had a gastric band to help her lose weight and then had a facelift surgery which boosted her confidence. She has also petitioned for a 'kebab curfew' to help others who struggle to eat well while explaining that quitting high fat foods helped her lose weight.

She said on Good Morning Britain: "As somebody who has always struggled with my weight having lost 12 stone and it's difficult in the current times we live in, the challenging times we live in. We all tend to look for different crutches. I think I am more likely to go in and get a sausage roll and the pasties - everything in moderation - if it's at the end of my road and it's open at 12 at night.

"t's like everything - I'm 25 years sober, 10 years drug free but if you have an addictive personality, if something is tempting you the more likely you are, especially in these difficult times."
