ULEZ is expanding from today in a move that will affect thousands of drivers that need to travel into London.

Under the old rules, ULEZ covered all areas within the North and South Circular Roads - but from August 29, it has been expanded to all London boroughs. Cars need to comply with current European emission standards when they travel in the zone, or face a £12.50 daily charge.

It is typically older cars and vehicles that cause the most pollution that will need to pay the ULEZ fee. If you don't pay the ULEZ charge, you could be issued a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of £180. This is reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days.

For many drivers, the change in the ULEZ boundary means they will look for other ways to travel into London. We reveal the nearest train stations around the expanded zone.

Before planning your route, check how much tickets cost to your chosen destination to see if you'd save money by getting the train, or paying the ULEZ fee. You can use a website such as Trainline to check prices online and plan your trip in advance to get the cheapest tickets.

How do I know if I need to pay ULEZ fee?

You can check if you need to pay the ULEZ charge here. Enter your number plate to find your vehicle. If you drive within the zone, you'll have to pay by midnight on the third day following the journey.

You don’t need to pay ULEZ if you are parked within the zone and don’t drive on that day. You can pay the ULEZ fee through the TFL website.
