Wisconsin fraternity brothers arrested after hazing raid finds injured pledges in basement
Two 20-year-old fraternity brothers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have been arrested for an alleged hazing incident.
The situation came to light after the local police were dispatched at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, to the Alpha Epsilon Pi (AePi) fraternity house on the 100 block of Langdon Street after receiving an anonymous tip. Upon arrival, officers found more than 30 mostly 18-year-old "partially clothed males covered in food, condiments, and other liquids" in a "hot and humid" basement set at 81 degrees, many of whom had “visible injuries consistent with being physically assaulted," the Madison Police Department said in a statement.
Authorities "escorted" everyone outside, where "all pledges were checked by officers for incapacitation and injuries," after declaring the event "unlawful," the police statement reads.
The president and vice president of the fraternity chapter, Brayden J. Klein and Samuel N. Vane, were arrested on hazing and disorderly conduct charges. Reports suggest the pair have been released on bond after being booked into Dane County Jail upon their arrest.
AePi has been an "unrecognized and unaccredited" student organization since 2015, after the university revoked its chapter. However, the school’s fraternity is still recognized by its national fraternity organization, operating without formal affiliation to the campus.
Both local police and the university’s Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards have launched investigations into the incident, which remain active and ongoing.
