Bosnian police officer dies by suicide during anti-trafficking raids targeting crime network

A Bosnian police officer died by suicide Wednesday after authorities searched his office during a multi-city anti-trafficking operation, officials and local media reported.

The State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) stated Thursday the suspect suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound during raids across Sarajevo, Doboj, and Bratunac targeting an organized crime network involved in arms and drug trafficking.

Local investigative outlet Istraga identified the suspect as a Sarajevo Canton police officer who shot himself inside the Ilijaš police station following the search, saying he was allegedly tied to the notorious Swedish criminal ring known as Foxtrot. According to Istraga, the operation was coordinated with Europol to target a ring allegedly supplying weapons to the gang led by Majid Rawa. Local media also linked the operation to last week’s record bust in the same municipality.

During the operation, SIPA said officers seized nine hunting rifles, five pistols, about 190 rounds of ammunition, and forged documents allegedly used to fraudulently issue firearms permits and facilitate illegal weapons sales.
