A woman was left fuming with a co-worker after he detected a lie behind an excuse she was using for her lateness at work, and told their boss the truth. The woman had been running late one morning and needed to come up with an excuse quickly decided to find a picture of a big traffic jam in the hopes her boss would think she was just stuck on the road.

As she sent it in the boss replied by telling her to get in safe but after a few minutes, her colleague noticed something a bit odd about the picture.

Taking to Mumsnet, the woman explained that her co-worker unveiled the hidden detail and her cover was blown - and fellow colleagues have not let her forget this embarrassing blunder.

In the post, the woman, who remained anonymous, explained: "In my half-asleep panic I was trying to come up with an excuse but all I could think of was to say there was a big traffic jam on my way to work as no-one in my team lives in my direction to say otherwise.

"I was quickly googling to try and find a photo of a traffic jam on my phone so it looked like I was in a big queue to give me time to get a shower.

"I tried finding a photo that looked like it had been taken from inside my car model (a Renault) but couldn't so instead I scrolled down for one that looked as if I'd stuck my phone out of the car window and taken one."

She sent in a picture of a big traffic jam to try to buy herself time and when she saw the nice reply off her boss telling her to get in safe, she thought she was off the hook but she quickly realised this was not the case.

"By the time I got out literally three minutes later all hell had broken loose on the team chat. I'd somehow posted a picture of a French road with cars on the other side of the road and French number plates," she explained.

"My manager had obviously not noticed but this annoying older bloke on our team had clearly scrutinised the picture and started making wisecracks on the chat."

The co-worker has since not let her forget it and will often ask if she is going to bring in croissants from the Boulangerie for them.

She added: "Two weeks later this bloke still won't let it lie and when it was my turn to get Friday treats he said in front of everyone including our director 'perhaps you could get some freshly baked croissants on your way in tomorrow' and everyone started laughing so it had to be explained to the big boss which made me look really bad for lying."

In response, many were unsympathetic to the woman and said she lied and, unfortunately, got found out.

One person wrote: "You lied and you got found out."

While another stated: "Don’t lie or lie but don’t send incriminating photographic evidence."
