Hojlund convinced Man Utd to 'back away' from Kane after Ten Hag talks

Erik ten Hag was bowled over by Rasmus Hojlund's 'personality and ambition' during video calls after Manchester United decided against making a move for Harry Kane.

Kane, 30, was of interest to the Old Trafford hierarchy in the weeks leading up to the summer transfer window and was believed to be attainable after entering the final year of his deal at Tottenham. However, the Londoners were unwilling to sell their star striker to a domestic rival.

The club turned their attention to different targets including Hojlund, who held multiple preliminary calls with Ten Hag. And the 20-year-old Denmark international soon emerged as United's top target after impressing Ten Hag in talks.

The Telegraph has outlined that the Dutchman was left impressed with Hojlund's character and desire to become one of the world's best strikers after holding several one-to-one conversations with the former Atalanta ace.

Ten Hag also believes that Hojlund has the perfect temperament to handle the rigours of the Premier League and that the youngster will cope with the expectations that come with leading the line for a club of Manchester United's stature.

Hojlund was officially unveiled as a United player on Saturday afternoon after the club agreed a deal with Atalanta which could see the Italian outfit bank £72million if add-ons are met.

United football director John Murtough described Hojlund as a "truly exceptional talent" in the official press release confirming the capture of the forward, while Ten Hag waxed lyrical about the youngster's qualities and his potential during an interview with MUTV.

Ten Hag said: “He is a real frontman. Very direct to the goal, very good presser, a physical presence. I think in the balance of this squad, we needed that, alongside [Marcus] Rashford, another player who is direct and can score a goal. That is all in his mind: he wants to score goals.

“I think he has huge potential. And now it's up to him first, to explore that and we will support him, all the coaches, the team, the team was waiting for a type like him. They will integrate him in the dressing room and in the pitch, they will help him.

“Finally, the player has to prove it. That is the character we need; we need hungry players and he is a player who is so determined to score goals, winning games and winning trophies.”

Hojlund also expressed his excitement after completing the formalities of his dream switch on the weekend - but United fans may have to wait some time to see their new striker in action.

United confirmed that Hojlund had picked up a "small issue" during his pre-season programme with Atalanta which means he will miss the start of the new Premier League campaign.
