Primark has introduced new self service checkouts across more of its stores after starting the rollout last year.

The popular high street retail giant decided to roll out self service checkouts in September last year to appeal to shoppers who prefer to buy this way. The move was welcomed by customers as due to the popularity of the chain, they can often spend a significant amount of time queuing to make their purchases at a manned checkout.

Initially, they were rolled out at Primark stores in Sheffield, Northampton, West Bromwich and Kingston as part of a trial. Most recently, checkouts were introduced in stores in Milton Keynes and in Basingstoke. Both stores have been refurbished with the tills unveiled as they reopened to customers over the last week.

Both store's refits come as part of Primark’s £140million investment in its UK store estate by the end of 2024, as announced last November. Going forward, the retailer told The Mirror that the checkouts were still in the trial stage" and future stores are to be chosen on a case by case basis.

A Primark spokesperson said: "We've installed self-service checkouts across a small selection of stores as part of a trial to understand how they can work for both our customers and our business. The response to the checkouts has been really positive to date, especially from customers who are short on time or making smaller purchases, and we continue to monitor the reaction to them before making any future decisions.”

Last year the retailer said the response to the new checkouts had been "really positive". In particular, Primark said they were beneficial for customers who were "short on time" or making smaller purchases.

The Sun reports that there are currently nine Primark stores which have self service checkouts - these include:

  • Sheffield The Moor
  • Coventry
  • Slough
  • Kingston
  • Edinburgh
  • West Bromwich
  • Northampton
  • Basingstoke
  • Milton Keynes Shopping Park

Last month, the retailer expanded its click and collect service to 32 more stores across central London. The Click and collect service allows customers to browse items online before choosing a day and time to pick them up in store.

For now, click and collect is only available if you’re buying kid's toys, clothing and nursery items, which means you can’t order other ranges, like womenswear and homeware at the moment. The service is also currently free to use and you only need to spend a minimum of £10 to access it.

Around 1,500 baby, kids and nursery items are available to click and collect, with hundreds of products exclusive to click and collect.

Primark first launched click and collect in 25 stores in the north of England and Wales in November last year. Sadly shoppers still can’t order products for home delivery online - despite pleas for the fashion chain to add this as an option.
