When you think of a gardener, you might picture someone dressed in scruffy overalls with grass-stained knees. But think again. A "glamorous gardener" who loves to dress up while tending to her plants believes her fashionable ensemble is the key to success.

Lucie Nicola, 40, recognises she doesn't opt for a typical outfit when she steps out in hot pants and sequins. She does, however, love her look, and she thinks other gardeners could benefit from her approach.

The mum-of-two from Essex explained: "Most people would go out in old clothes. But my garden makes me so happy and brings me so much joy, I want to feel as beautiful as the plants I'm planting.

"Feeling great about myself makes my garden more beautiful and makes me perform better. I've had comments saying I 'walk up and down like a catwalk', or people asking 'why does she feel the need to wear these clothes?'. Some people just think it's more for attention than doing what I'm doing. But so many people think it's great, showing people gardening is for all ages."

Lucie, who estimates she's spent around £5,000 on her garden, spends at least two hours a day in her pride and joy. "I'm out there every single day and can't relax until it's tidy, I'll make it look tidy all through the year.

"My children have grown up with their mum being a freak in the garden so it's not like I just started something new," she said. "My husband loves it. I've converted a non-gardener into gardening."

Her Instagram fans - of which she has thousands - also enjoy following her adventures on her account @‌lucielou.official. "I just want to be known as a glamour gardener, and I want to make people feel like they can feel lovely in their garden," she concluded. "I want to make gardening sexy, fun and interesting, and you can definitely make your garden look pretty on a budget."
