The debate about the correct name for a bread roll, bap, barm, bun, or whatever you would call it, has led onto another heated topic.

One person has pointed out that if you come from a place where you call the type of bread a roll, it can get incredibly confusing when you're ordering a classic British breakfast staple - two sausages inside a bread that is sliced open.

For example, if you go to Greggs and order a sausage roll, open, you'd be disappointed. At Greggs, a sausage roll is a pastry with seasoned sausage meat in it.

A Reddit user probably didn't know what they were letting themselves in for when they posted a picture of two sausages inside bread which was sliced open, and asked: "In places that call a bread bun a 'roll', 'how would you order one of these'?".

The post, which appeared on the CasualUK forum, has over 2.6k replies, with various suggestions of what you could call it to get your point across.

One person suggested: "Sausage roll but like not a sausage roll sausage roll like sausage in a roll like not an actual sausage roll y'know but like a roll and like cut it open and like put sausages in it like a bacon roll yeah but like sausage not bacon init."

Another person suggested that you might have to ask for "two sausages on a roll".

However, a Greggs customer thinks they've worked out the code so that the staff know which one you are talking about.

They said: "I've worked this one out. Specifically for Gregs. Here's what you do.

"I'll have a sausage roll please". Eye contact down and left.

"I'll have a sausage roll please". Eye contact up and right.

"It's like the staff intuitively know to look for the slightest of eye movements and they get it right every time."

Another person agreed: "It's gotta be if you're looking at the sausage rolls, then they know you want a sausage roll but if you're looking at sausage roll then they know you want a sausage roll. Really obvious and clear when you think about it."

Adding to the confusion, one person said: "This happened to me once. I wanted a sausage roll but they gave me a sausage roll. Had to tell them sorry but I meant a sausage roll, not a sausage roll."

Others suggested that you would have to separate the two by asking for a "roll and sausage".

Inevitably, it did turn into a further debate about what the 'correct' name for the item is. One person said: "A sausage bap please," another agreed saying: "This is the way.".

Some else commented: "Except a few places in the west midlands where they are called batches. But then there is also barm."

Thankfully, Greggs has actually sorted this conundrum for you – as on the menu it's called a Sausage Breakfast Roll, to avoid confusion.

What do you call it, and how would you order a 'sausage roll', if you didn't mean the pastry? Tell us in the comment section below.
