Zac Efron has reached out to his high-profile ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Hudgens - 13 years after their shock split.

The High School Musical co-star's might be back in contact again after Zac, 35, made a subtle attempt to grab Vanessa's attention on social media.

The former lovebirds, became household names in their respective roles as Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical film trilogy between 2006 and 2008.

During that time, the pair found themselves in an off-screen romance and soon became one of Hollywood's most famous and loved couples.

However, Zac and Vanessa felt their adoring admirers heartbroken when it was announced that they had gone their separate ways in 2010 - fours years after first meeting one another.

Thirteen years after their split, Zac has sent High School Musical fans into meltdown this week after following his famous ex-girlfriend on Instagram.

The actor hit the follow button in recent days, and his actions most certainly didn't go unnoticed by eagle-eyed fans of the former flames.

Taking to social media to gush over Zac's subtle attempt to reach out to Vanessa, fans shared their reactions.

Elsewhere, others hoped that the move might signal a High School Musical reunion in the very near future.

Referencing their hit High School Musical song, one person tweeted: “Vanessa Hudgens is not yet following Zac Efron but he's following her AND in 2023! It's the start of something new.”

"OMG ZAC FOLLOWS VANESSA ON INSTA!!!!! My life is complete," another enthused.

"I really feel like a HSM reunion is coming guys!!!!! Especially with Zac following Vanessa. HOW EXCITING," someone else tweeted.

While a fourth gushed: "Just when I thought I couldn't love Zac Efron anymore."

It comes after Zac and Vanessa sparked rumours they were set to reunite in a High School Musical reunion after they were both spotted taking photos outside of East High back in September last year.

Sadly, there has been no confirmation that another movie is in the works.

Zac and Vanessa first confirmed their romance in 2007 after starring in the first HSM together.

The pair then decided to call it quits on their relationship three years later in December 2010.
