Zac Efron appeared in a recent interview to promote his new movie The Iron Claw and some fans think the star is unrecognisable.

The 36-year-old actor appeared in an Entertainment Weekly video with his co-stars Jeremy Allen White, and Harris Dickinson. Some people noticed a difference between the star now and his looks during his High School Musical days.

One person commented on an Instagram video, writing: "What happened to his face??" Other cruel trolls compared him to Thanos from the Marvel franchise, writing: "Woah he looks like the villain in Avengers Endgame."

"Damn his face doesn’t even move now," another social troll pointed out. Other social networkers that he must have had plastic surgery done or blamed it on "growth hormones."

But lucky for Zac, he had devoted fans jump into the comments to educate those who might not have been following Zac's career. "Before everyone comments about it Z said that his jaw shattered in an accident and he had to get it restructured which is supposedly why it looks different now," someone wrote.

Zac's fuller face was first cruelly scrutinised on the internet when he appeared in a Facebook Watch "Earth Day Musical" with famed scientist Bill Nye in 2021. Rumours flew about plastic surgery or Botox being done on the star, but he kept quiet about what happened until last year when he opened up in a Men's Health cover story about when he "almost died".

The 17 Again star told the magazine that he shattered his jaw while running in the house. He said he fell while wearing slippery socks and hit his chin against a granite corner of a fountain, knocking himself out.

When he came to, he said he realised his "chin bone was hanging off his face." After the fall, he started working with a physical therapist because his masseter muscles on the inside of his face grew in size to "compensate" for the injury.

"The masseters just grew. They just got really, really big," he said, eventually stopping physical therapy. This wasn't the first time Zac injured his jaw.

In 2013, the Hairspray actor broke his jaw when he fell in his home, slipping on a puddle of water. He had to have his jaw wired shut.

Zac is starring in The Iron Claw, due out this December. The biographical film centers around the Von Erich family, professional wrestlers plagued by a "family curse."

He plays Kevin Von Erich, the last surviving member of the family. Jeremy and Harris play his brothers, Kerry Von Erich and David Von Erich respectfully.
