Highly-rated Brentford goalkeeper David Raya has said that it is “not the right time” to pen a new deal, amid interest in his signature.

The Spanish stopper has caught the eye with the Bees over the last couple of seasons, with his form having been key for Thomas Frank's men this term as they attempt to secure a place in a major European competition for the first time in their history. The 27-year-old has played every minute in the league this season, helping himself to eight clean sheets in the process.

However, his future in West London is up for debate. Raya has just 18 months left on his current contract, with Manchester United and Tottenham both thought to be circling as they attempt to find successor’s to respective long-term No.1's David de Gea and Hugo Lloris.

Now Raya has revealed talks over an extended deal with the Bees have been put on pause. He told the Press Association: “I don’t think it’s the right time to sign a contract at the moment. I’m really, really happy and right now I’m just thinking about doing the best for the team and trying to push for Europe.

“I was offered a new contract last year and one in January but we didn’t reach an agreement. I would like to see what happens in summer, however I’m happy at Brentford.

“For now a new contract is secondary, the most important thing is the team and the games. We’ll see where we are in May.

“You never know what’s around the corner. There’s nothing I can say about what’s going to happen in the summer. I don’t even know what’s going to happen on Saturday.”

Raya, who has two Spain caps to his name, has been with Brentford since the summer of 2019 and has made 144 appearances for a club that, he admits, "feels like home."

“I’m not sure if it’s interest, people talking or my name being thrown around,” he added. “Brentford feels like home, when I came here three-and-a-half years ago it’s because I needed a new challenge. It’s always going to be home – no matter what.

“I’m in one of the happiest times of my career. I’m a happy guy, you will never see me moaning. Football is my life, so I do what I love.”
