A drunk man armed with a machete broke into a school and stabbed a nine-year-old boy in the head, police say.

The suspect, named as Mr Atip, was arrested for attempted murder after he allegedly attacked the child and left him with a fractured skull.

The brutal incident happened at the boy's school in Thailand after the 45-year-old man, who confessed to inhaling glue, scaled a fence to carry out the attack.

The unnamed young boy had been sitting near a fence with a small group of pupils at his school in Nong Ya Sai, a district in the western part of Suphan Buri province, central Thailand when he was suddenly stabbed in the head with a machete that was around 30cm long.

He was detained on charges of attempted murder and of carrying weapons into a town or village without permission.

The boy remains in a serious condition and was left needing brain surgery after the random attack.

According to Thai media reports, the victim of the attack was sitting with his back to the fence so did not see the assailant coming.

The other pupils fled the scene.

The suspect made a swift getaway after he had been spotted by a teacher and the school's caretaker.

Earlier this month, a helicopter pilot in Thailand crushed eight people while trying to scatter sweets at a party for children.

The Thai navy helicopter was ordered to fly low and scatter flowers and sweets for kids celebrating a National Children's Day event.

But its powerful downdrafts caused the outdoor tents to flatten and collapse on people attending the event.

Horrifying footage shows people screaming and running as the roof collapses and one 58-year-old woman named by local media as Nareerat Khumkana was reportedly taken to hospital with a broken neck and a cut on her head.

Navy commander-in-chief Adm Choengchai Chomchoengpaet offered financial aid and medical care to the injured people, according to the Thai newspaper.
