Iceland has tickled the nation after warning its most loyal customers should keep away from its stores.

Known for the iconic tagline 'That's why mums go to Iceland', the budget retailer poked fun at itself by instructing mums to stay away from the supermarket on Sunday, March 10. For organised readers who always check their diary - you'll know that day is Mothering Sunday.

Taking to Facebook, Iceland urged mums of the UK to put down their shopping bags and take the annual event to stay at home and 'put their feet up'. The post quickly went viral, with hundreds of shoppers praising the brand's humour.

"No mums this Sunday," the supermarket joked. "It's a fact that mums go to Iceland. However, for one day only, on Sunday, March 10, we're asking that they don't go to Iceland.

"Sunday is Mother's Day and we don't want any mums visiting our Iceland or The Food Warehouse stores. Instead, we want those icons that should be celebrated this Sunday to put their feet up." The retailer added if mums needed some 'emergency Yorkshire Puddings', have ran out of toilet roll, or want to indulge in a tub of ice cream - they would 'let you in for a couple of minutes'.

Wales Online highlights the positive response from shoppers, who branded the post as 'brilliant'. "This is just so funny. Iceland has a sense of humour!" wrote one user. "I love coming to Iceland though, it makes me happy!" commented another.

Many Mums said despite Mother's Day approaching, they'll still be rushed off their feet with domestic duties. "Chance would be a fine thing!" said one woman. "Unfortunately as a mum putting your feet up isn't an option! [I] love the sentiment though." Another agreed, adding: "No chance of putting my feet up. I've got 11 [people] for dinner."
