A traffic police officer has sparked much debate after his video on motorway middle lane hogging went viral on TikTok.

In the clip, he discusses the dangers of staying in the middle lane on a motorway, saying the default position should be on the left lane unless overtaking. But users of the platform jumped on to comment when he said motorists don’t need to indicate when moving back into the so-called slow lane.

The video by TikTok content creator George's Car Media features Sergeant Owen Messenger driving along a motorway explaining how to correctly overtake and how all drivers should use lane one - unless overtaking a slower vehicle in front of them.

After overtaking a heavy duty vehicle, the video shows the officer, of Devon and Cornwall Police Roads Policing, moving his car back into the left lane. He said: “There’s no requirement to indicate to come back over to the left because the default position is to be to the left in lane one.”

The video has more than 500,000 views with comments both agreeing and disagreeing with the advice.

'This is absurd. You always let people know where you're going'

One viewer commented: “Do not agree with no indication, this is absurd. You always let people know where you're going.”

And another posted: “I’m 41 and never knew you didn’t need to indicate to move back to the left.”

But other users defended the advice, saying: “When you’ve passed someone slower than you, there’s no need to indicate because there’s no potential action for them to take.”

But what do YOU think? Should you indicate when moving back into the motorway slow lane? Take our poll below and expand on your decision in the comments below.

Andrew Jervis, CEO of ClickMechanic, believes drivers should use common sense when driving on the motorway. He said: “Motorway driving requires motorists to be alert and ready for unexpected events.

“Middle-lane hogging is a frustration for many motorists on the motorway, and roads do flow better when the other lanes are only used for overtaking. While there are rules, it doesn’t mean all motorists will stick to them. For example, someone might try to undertake you, in which case, indicating would show them where you are intending on moving to.

“I would urge road users to apply good judgement. If it is a busy time or motorists seem to be moving lanes frequently, using your indicator for moving any lane is wise. But if it’s a quiet day, then other motorists might be able to expect your move back into lane one without you needing to indicate. Indicating where you’re going on a motorway can go a long way to keep yourself and other motorists safe.”
