If you're struggling to reach your weight loss goals, it can be really demotivating.

Many people love a coffee in the morning to wake you up and get you ready to face the day ahead. So, how would you feel if you found out that adding a surprising ingredient to your morning cup of Joe could actually help boost your weight loss?

This ingredient, commonly found in cakes and pastries, wouldn't usually be associated with weight loss - but studies have shown that adding butter to your brew could help you in a myriad of ways. It sounds too good to be true, but butter in coffee has been used for hundreds of years and is still regularly done in Ethiopia, Yemen, parts of India, Singapore, Vietnam, Tibet and many other countries.

Adding dairy to coffee is nothing new, butter just hasn't really caught on in the UK yet, but many have reported health benefits. It isn't as simple as just adding any old butter to your brew, though. There's a tried and tested method, according to Gloucestershire Live. Below, we explain the potential benefits of this surprising concotion.

It provides essential vitamins

Quality butter is rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, E and K2. Vitamin K2 is particularly important for calcium metabolism and may play a role in preventing fatty plaque buildup in arteries.

It can improve energy levels

The combination of caffeine from coffee and fats from butter provides a sustained release of energy throughout the morning, which reduces the spike and crash often associated with coffee consumption.

It supports ketosis

For those choosing to follow a ketogenic diet, consuming fats like those in butter can help maintain the state of ketosis, where the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates.

It can suppress your appetite

The high-fat content can increase feelings of fullness, helping to reduce overall calorie intake for those trying to lose weight. This can be particularly beneficial for people following intermittent fasting or ketogenic diets.

So, how do you make it?

It's not just a case of whacking Lurpak in your latte, unfortunately. For best results, add one tablespoon of unsalted, high-quality butter to a mug of filtered, black coffee. If you prefer your coffee a little more fancy, use a milk frother which will create a nice bubbly foam. Some people add milk to the coffee, but this is optional and will depend on how strong you prefer your coffee to be.
