Ricky Gervais a Golden Globes no-show as he wins award after saying he wouldn't

Though Ricky Gervais did not host the Golden Globes this year, he did get some recognition.

The British comedian was nominated for the new category, Best Performance in Stand-up Comedy on television, for his Netflix special Armageddon.

Ricky scooped the gong for the stand-up show. Armageddon has peaked at number one in 10 countries. Ricky went up against Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes in the category. Jim Gaffigan presented the award but Ricky was not in attendance to accept it.

Earlier in the day, Ricky did not think he was going to win the award, as he posted a tweet on X, (formerly known as Twitter). He wrote: "I'm nominated for another Golden Globe tonight. This time for my Netflix special #Armageddon. Won't win, but it's nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag."

The comedian's special has left Netflix viewers divided, with some loving his no-holds-barred comedy, but others saying his jokes go too far.

Following the success of his and Dave Chappelle's Netflix comedy specials, he joked that the pair should take the hosting helm at this year's Oscars.

Ricky previously hosted the Golden Globes Awards in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2020, and has made headlines with his controversial opening monologues , which include jokes about Leonardo DiCaprio's penchant for younger women, Jeffrey Epstein's private island and Caitlyn Jenner's 2015 car crash that resulted in the death of another driver.

At this year's Golden Globes Barbie was nominated for Best Motion Picture (musical or comedy), Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (musical or comedy), Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, Best Director (Motion Picture) and Best Original Song (Motion Picture), which includes three songs from the film.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer also fared well with eight nominations for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Performance by a Male Actor (Drama), Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Score and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
