'Natural disinfectant' removes limescale from showerheads with no scrubbing

Showerheads are prone to getting seriously grubby if not washed often - limescale and grime can build up quickly, especially if you live in a hard water area.

Limescale, soap, and dirt from body oils are some of the main culprits for grime around the shower area, and a build-up of mildew can also happen, causing mould - but fear not, as they can be easily cleaned using natural products and tools.

A cleaning expert has shared with the Express how using natural solutions as an alternative to harsh chemicals can not only save you money, but is better for your health in the long run.

Laura Harnett, founder of Seep eco-cleaning products, told the Express that natural products like white vinegar are better for your showerhead.

If you can remove your showerhead, it needs to be popped into a bucket or sink filled with white vinegar - but be careful not to lose the rubber washer. You should then leave it overnight, or 30 minutes if it's nickel, gold, or brass.

Laura suggested people: "Rinse the shower head with warm water and then scrub with an old toothbrush to remove any mould that's clinging on.

"Vinegar is a natural disinfectant so the shower head will be super hygienic as well as sparkling clean."

If the showerhead cannot be removed, then the same method can be used, but instead, you would use a plastic bag filled with vinegar and put it around the showerhead with an elastic band.

Bicarbonate of soda can also be used to remove limescale and scum - it should be mixed with water to make a stiff paste to scrub away tougher residue. As a final step, a lemon can be rubbed over the showerhead to make it look as good as new.

If you don't have the ingredients needed, they can be purchased cheaply. Wilko Original White Vinegar costs £1.50 for one litre and Dri-Pak Pure White Vinegar costs £2 for 500ml from Ocado.
