Many houseproud people wouldn't dream of leaving the house first thing in the morning without making sure their bed is beautifully made, however, they could well be doing themselves a disservice. One savvy cleaning guru has advised people to give it a good hour after waking before making their bed, advising instead to simply 'throw the duvet back and let your bed breathe'.

Cleaning expert Mrs. D warned followers that slept-in beds are 'magnets' for bed bugs and dust mites, who are drawn to the shed skin and sweat left behind by newly risen humans. Dust mites and bed bugs are said to thrive in 'damp and humid areas', and so giving your bed a good airing first thing could help prevent your nice fresh sheets from becoming a breeding ground.

Taking to Instagram, where she goes by the username @mrs.ds.cleaning.reviews, Mrs. D explained: "Some people only let their bed breathe in the summer, and think that you don't need to do this in the winter because of the cold weather.

"But this isn't true. With central heating being on in the winter it can attract dust mites and bed bugs just as much as in the summer months.

"So, by making your bed first thing every morning you are trapping all that damp air and helping dust mites and bed bugs breed (sounds horrible, but it's true)."

Mrs. D went on to advise her followers to air their beds for at least one hour every day to ward off any unwelcome visitors, a step which could also prolong your mattress life.

She added: "I know it's nice to see your bedroom looking clean and fresh and of course, we lead busy lives, which means it's easy to make the bed before you go to work.

"But doing this will help a lot. If you don't have an hour in the morning leave it till you get home and make the bed then at least you know it's had a good airing."

One impressed follower commented: "I didn't know this! Will definitely do it from now on!"

Another approved: "Always air the bed then make it before I get in - lovely and fresh."
