The Great British Bake Off's judges and hosts have spoofed The Godfather ahead of the premiere of the 14th series.

The Channel 4 culinary show returns tonight at 8pm with the first of 10 brand new episodes, after a nearly year-long hiatus from our screens. This year's series will see host Noel Fielding joined in the iconic baking tent by newcomer Alison Hammond, who was confirmed as Matt Lucas's replacement on Bake Off last March. Celebrity chef Paul Hollywood and South African restaurateur Prue Leith will also reprise their roles as judges.

In a new video to promote the exciting season, the cast has teamed up to appear in a short film inspired by the 1975 blockbuster, The Godfather. The dramatic clip opens with credits reading, "Bake Off Pictures Presents The Breadfather", before a tuxedo-clad Paul Hollywood appears on screen as 'Don Pauleone'. Noel Fielding is then introduced as Noel Focaccia, before Prue Leith makes her grand entrance as 'Pane di Leith'. Alison Hammond is the final star to join the squad, going by the alias 'Alison Cannoli-mond' for the sinister skit.

"Welcome to the family," can be heard in a voiceover above the classical music, just as the Big Brother star leans down to plant a kiss on a loaf of bread. The last shot of the sketch shows Alison, Prue and Noel ominously staring at the camera while resting a hand on Paul, who is seated behind a desk as he cradles the thick loaf

The promo clip has received positive reviews from most Great British Bake Off fans, with many revelling in its cheeky nature.

"Hilarious!" one person wrote, while another said, "Love those names." Many folks were also quick to hail Alison Hammond's addition to the show, with one viewer predicting she'll be the "magic ingredient."

Not everybody was so impressed by The Godfather twist, however, with one person writing, "Whose idea was this? It’s awful."

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Great British Bake Off would no longer feature a national-theme week for its upcoming series. In the past, contestants have been asked to created dishes inspired by certain countries, such as Japan, Germany and Mexico. The theme was scrapped, however, following backlash from some viewers that the challenges endorsed cultural appropriation.

"We didn't want to offend anyone but the world has changed and the joke fell flat," Bake Off producer Kieran Smith told the Guardian, before reassuring fans that they could still expect all the traditional challenges of the show. "We’re doing all the regular weeks: Cakes, biscuits, bread, patisserie, chocolate." He also announced the addition of "party cakes", which will likely see some fairly spectacular creations from the show's contestants.
