Peter Crouch has seen shades of Sir Alex Ferguson’s man-management in the way Erik ten Hag has dealt with player issues at Manchester United.

‌The former England striker has been wholly impressed with his handling of the situations involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho. Both of which saw the players take to social media to air their grievances, washing their dirty linen in public.

‌Ronaldo was binned by United soon after his outburst on Piers Morgan’s show last year, with a move to Saudi Arabia following swiftly after. While last week Sancho finally removed a social media post in which he bit back at Ten Hag’s comments in the media, a post which came as a result of the player being left out of the United’s squad for the game against Arsenal after what his manager described as below-par performances in training.

‌Crouch has also been impressed with the way the manager has backed Harry Maguire in the wake of the abuse he has suffered at the hands of supporters. He said: “Erik ten Hag has handled his players pretty well.

‌“He has been firm, he has taken no nonsense… the way he dealt with Ronaldo, that could have dragged on and on but he dealt with it really well.

‌“The Sancho stuff, I don’t agree with, really. Players coming out on social media… these things should be dealt with in-house and I don’t think that would have happened with a certain man in charge. That always ended badly. And Ten Hag has been just as strong, he has shown who’s the boss and that’s the way forward.”

‌Maguire has been a target for the boo-boys for some time now and it got worse when he scored an own-goal against Scotland in midweek.

‌Crouch added: “I just think it’s sad. In this day and age on social media, if you have a bad game it gets highlighted, there’s no in-the-middle, you’re either the worst player in the world or the best player in the world.

‌“It happened to me, I got booed for England coming on by my own fans, so I have been there where he has been and it’s a horrible place to be.

‌“But he has good people around him, lots of people have come out and supported him and none more so than his manager.

‌“He seems to be taking it very, very well but unfortunately it’s the world we live in at the moment where it’s bordering on the ridiculous, certainly for England.

‌“He’s having a difficult time at Manchester United and there’s no disguising that, he has found himself out of the team and lost form. But the abuse goes beyond criticism.”
