There's nothing worse than a bad night's sleep. You can try everything to nod off, whether's that wearing a sweaty eyemask or sticking some manky old foam earplugs in your ears - but it still doesn't work.

Noise-cancelling earphones have been a godsend for insomniacs everywhere. They're great at filtering out distracting noise or, for us tinnitus sufferers, covering up the perpetual ringing inside your own head. However, they're still not a perfect solution as it's hard to sleep on your side with earphones in and it's very easy to lose them.

Well the tech wizards at Philips and Kokoon have clearly been paying attention to these issues as they've cooked up some new earphones designed specifically for bedtime. With an unusual wiggly wire design, the Philips Sleep Headphones certainly don't look like your average AirPods and by the sound of things don't act like them either.

Firstly, the earbuds are some of the smallest around, measuring just 6mm thick (compared to the average 20mm+ of most other earphones). That means that the sidesleepers among you can happily wear them with your ear pressed firmly to the pillow, and without any of the usual discomfort. This is possible because Philips has moved most of the components that you'd usually find inside an earphone to a small module that sits at the base of your neck, which they say is designed to be 'undetectable when lying down'.

Of course, the Sleep Headphones also come fitted with some pretty gnarly noise isolation technology. It not only blocks out external noises but uses something called SnoreProtect technology to mask increases in volume (such as if your partner begins snoring loudly).

Perhaps the most high-tech aspect of the Sleep Headphones comes with the Kokoon app on Android or iPhone. The headphones are packed full of smart sensors and even a heart rate monitor to gather data on your sleep pattern. You can then get personalised advice on how to improve your sleep or better understand what influences your sleep quality, a bit like the 'Sleep Cycle' app which times your morning alarm to your natural circadian rhythms.

The only catch is that a good night's sleep doesn't come cheap. The Sleep Headphones are currently available to pre-order for £249.00, so they're not exactly the cheapest cans on the market. But, if chamomile tea just isn't hitting the spot anymore, they could well be worth a try when they come out in October.
