A man faced a huge backlash from his in-laws after he booked himself into a hotel as they refused to let him sleep next to his wife during a visit. The man first thought his father-in-law was initially joking when he said he had to sleep on the sofa but after realising he was deadly serious, the man took off and stayed in a nearby hotel.

The next morning his wife rang to say his in-laws were fuming about how he left but were unwilling to apologise - instead demanding him to come back and sleep on the sofa for the rest of the trip.

But on Reddit, the man said that he would not be apologising to keep the peace and decided to push back against his wife's family.

In the post, the man explained: "The in-laws invited us to come visit and stay with them for a few days and we took them up on the offer. We flew in yesterday, and everything went well.

"Things went south at the end of the night when it was made clear that they didn't want me sharing a bed with my wife while in their home, and that they expected me to sleep on the sofa.

"After arguing back and forth for a bit, I decided to leave and book a hotel. I told my wife she didn't have to come with me, she chose to stay and I said I'd come back the next day."

He added that the next morning when he called his wife, he was willing to apologise if her parents acknowledged their rule was unreasonable. But when he heard back, it was clear they were not happy with the compromise and forced him to come back and stay on the sofa.

"If I don't agree to this, I'm not welcome back in the house," he explained.

"I'm pretty livid at this point - I told her that there's absolutely no chance that I will do that, and I am no longer willing to offer any sort of apology."

After the incident, his wife's sisters also got involved and told him he should just go with it and not make a fuss as their dad is like that.

In an update to the post, the man explained that he has gone away on a trip and invited his wife and her sisters along and knows that his father-in-law will be fuming but does not think they should buckle under pressure from him.

In response, many have flooded the comments with support for the man as one wrote: "Your in-laws are abhorrent hosts. It's their house, their rules and their rules are stupid. Rather than fighting a pointless battle, you set a clear and valid boundary, and they chose to take offense to it."

While another added: "The fact that the whole family is telling you to just grab your ankles to keep the peace - that tells me a lot about that family dynamic."
