With February often being considered the month of love, due to Valentine's Day, many people will likely spend time thinking about their nearest and dearest and wanting to celebrate their relationship.

But with thoughts of a current flame, your mind might also drift back to previous partners and you might find yourself reminiscing about an ex during this time - or even dreaming about them.

This could leave you confused as to what this means - why would you be thinking of someone else when you're happy with someone new?

If this sounds familiar, then we might be able to assuage your worries, as a dream expert has explained some of the reasons why you might be dreaming of an ex.

She said: "Dreaming of an ex doesn't mean you are still in love with them or that they are still in love with you. It does however suggest some unfinished business from your past.

"You may be repeating similar relationship patterns in your current relationship and your dreaming mind is sending you a warning not to let history repeat itself.

"Or your ex could be a symbol of a sense of adventure that may be lacking in your waking life. You may need to find that heady sense of passion in other areas of your life, for example, doing more of what you love or shifting your mindset to a more optimistic one. "

The expert goes on to say how your dreaming mind will often use an ex to tell you something as they are a "potent symbol", meaning they will stick in your mind and make you think more deeply.

"On waking you are going to start reflecting deeply on why your ex is reappearing now when you thought you were over them or haven't thought about them for ages. Your dreaming mind wants to make you feel uncomfortable because it knows that it's only outside your comfort zone that deeper meaning can be found," Theresa explained.

"Self-reflection is the beginning of all personal growth and wisdom and the more you understand yourself the happier and healthier all your relationships will be."

She added: "All your dreams ever want for you is to have greater self-understanding, and all they ever want to give you is a sense of possibility. There is so much hidden creativity within you. They want you to fall head over heels with that potential before falling head over heels in love with someone else. "

This comes after Theresa shared top tips for how to begin 'decoding' the meaning of your dreams if you're curious to know more.

She told how you have to start by asking yourself how the scenario from your dream makes you feel and then you need to examine the symbols and metaphors from your dream, much in the same way and English student would analyse a poem to look for meaning.

"Look at the foreshadowing, look at the metaphors, look at the plans and how things can mean other things. That's exactly how you interpret your dreams," she said.

"Sometimes dreams can be literal, but it's extremely rare. Around 99.9 percent of them are symbolic and it's up to you to look at these symbols from a personal perspective and try and work out their meaning."

And when you do finally figure out what your dreams are telling you, Theresa claims it will bring a "massive burst of excitement as well as stress relief".

"Dreams really are our best friend, trying to help and heal us. Even nightmares," she adds.
