Neighbours soap star Jason Donovan has revealed he was jealous of co-star Kylie Minogue when they starred together on the Australian soap.

The pair played Scott and Charlene Robinson, appearing in 307 episodes together from 1986 until 1988. Off camera, the couple dated for five years before splitting in 1989.

Seen as one of the iconic couples from the Aussie soap, their appearances as fresh-faced stars on Ramsay Street launched their careers with Jason continuing into music and theatre and Kylie becoming a chart-topping success. Despite both being hugely successful, Jason has revealed that he was envious of his former girlfriend's career as he revealed he 'wanted' some of her success.

Speaking in a radio interview with host Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, Jason commented: "Kylie is incredibly hardworking, she’s a wonderful family person and human being. She has a great sense of humour as well.

"She just keeps coming back and you know her passion and her love. Even when we’re going back to the early days of Neighbours and the start of her music career, it was just evident to see that she has a gift."

He continued: "She’s one of these people that just can, you know, walk into a room, and pick up a song in two minutes. She can go, and I always used to remember in Neighbours she would come in on set, I’d be slogging away over the script the night before and Kylie would read 5 pages on the day and just get all the lines right.

"That doesn’t necessarily mean one’s going to develop into the most amazing artist, but she has, and she’s just built on it. I was jealous, God I wanted, I was looking at it going ‘I want some of that’ and I talk very openly about that. I’m very honest about that."

The comments come as Kylie will front a television special looking at her legendary career in acting and music on ITV. After the huge success of An Audience with Adele, which was enjoyed by millions, the programme with Kylie is expected to follow the same format. An Audience with Kylie is said to promise 'sensational live performances' and 'VIP guests' in its special recording on December 1 at the Royal Albert Hall.

ITV say there will be a 'supersize A-lister and fan-filled audience' for their latest programme, featuring the best of Kylie's five-decade career. She'll be performing 'A dazzling array of favourites from her award-winning back catalogue'.

Discussing her upcoming special, Kylie commented: "I'm so excited to announce that I am teaming up with ITV for An Audience with at London’s iconic Royal Albert Hall! I’ll be performing some of my favourite tracks from throughout my career and no doubt answering some surprising questions from the audience. I can’t wait to share this moment with you all."
