Getting a good night's sleep is the top thing that helps Brits feel good

Getting a good night's sleep has been named as the number one thing that helps Brits feel good – followed by seeing a sunny, blue sky, receiving a compliment, and simply the summer season.

Research revealed the top 20 things that help boost Brits' moods – from booking a holiday or finishing a workout, to eating their favourite snack, or simply getting a quiet moment alone to themselves.

The survey of 2,000 adults found that the average person enjoys three feel-good moments a day – and, over a typical week, they feel good about four days out of the seven.

The average adult will also try to do 12 things each month to boost their mood – although only a quarter (24%) regularly set aside time just to do something that makes them happy.

But despite striving to make themselves feel good as much as they can, one in three of those polled (34%) admit they are finding it increasingly hard to be happy.

And 83% claim they have to proactively avoid negative stories on social media and TV, due to it leaving them feeling “emotionally drained”.

The research, commissioned by cheese snack Babybel, also found almost half of Londoners (46%) currently feel like they need a pick-me-up.

In response, the brand has created the Goodness Bench inside King’s Cross Station, London, to mark the launch of its “Join the Goodness” campaign.

It is designed to spread feel-good vibes by playing positive news stories from the week, while donating to its longstanding charity partner, Comic Relief, each time the bench is sat on.

A spokesman for the brand said: “It’s more important than ever to do little things that make us feel good, inside and out – whether that means grabbing your favourite snack, or helping someone in need.

“We all need a boost from time to time, and feeling good goes hand-in-hand with doing good, which is why we wanted to spread positivity through this activation.”

Saturday is deemed the day of the week most likely to bring joy – with Monday, unsurprisingly, ranking worse.

It also emerged that 45% love nothing more than getting a nice bit of praise, while 37% are delighted when their pets are happy to see them.

And 68% feel happiness is infectious, according to the OnePoll.com research – and consequently, 35% often, or always, go out of their way to spread a bit of positivity.

Babybel’s spokesman added: “Many of the things on our top 20 list of happiness-makers come at absolutely no cost at all.

“Of course, whether we see a sunny blue sky in the morning isn’t up to us, sadly – but we can all give someone a compliment at any time, and spread goodness that way.

“Doing things to make others happy also has the benefit of making us happy as well, making it a really positive circle of behaviour.”
