Man Utd target who missed training on verge of sealing £13.7m Chelsea transfer
Chelsea are set to sign goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic who was a target of Premier League rivals Manchester United.
United have been in the market for goalkeepers this summer following the departure of David de Gea as a free agent. Andre Onana was signed from Inter Milan in a £47.2million deal, but there are still question marks over the position.
Manager Erik ten Hag is said to be keen on bringing in a new goalkeeper before the transfer window closes. However, a lot will depend on the future of Dean Henderson, who has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
One player who has been linked with a move to United is Djordje Petrovic, who was absent from training at the start of August amid speculation of a move. And the New England Revolution keeper is seemingly nearing a switch to the Premier League, but not to Old Trafford.
A deal has been agreed between Chelsea and New England for the transfer of Petrovic. Multiple sources have claimed that an agreement worth in the region of £13.66million has been reached between the two clubs that will see the 23-year-old leave Major League Soccer to move to England.
Marcel Sabitzer completes Man Utd transfer after last-minute deadline day dashChelsea have also been keen to strengthen the goalkeeping department this summer, as well as other areas of their squad. Following the exits of Edouard Mendy on a permanent deal to Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli and Kepa Arrizabalaga on loan to Real Madrid, reinforcements were needed.
Robert Sanchez was signed from Brighton for £25million, and now it seems that Petrovic will be added to the squad at Stamford Bridge in the near future. It’s been claimed that a medical has been booked for Wednesday for the Serbia international.
Petrovic is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents to enter the MLS in recent years. After signing for New England in 2022, he would go on to be named the second-best Goalkeeper of the Year in the MLS.
The Revs have been determined to keep Petrovic at the club amid interest from European clubs, including United and Chelsea. Nottingham Forest were also supposedly interested before they moved to sign Matt Turner from Arsenal.
Ligue 1 outfit Nantes reportedly made an offer worth £6.27 million plus add-ons that was rejected by New England. Despite this, it seems that Chelsea’s bid is too good to refuse if the latest reports are to be believed, and the player will become the newest addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s squad in West London.
