Roy Keane is no stranger to issuing scathing assessments of Manchester United and Saturday evening was no different as he analysed the 2-0 defeat by Tottenham.

United made the trip to north London aiming to put in a better performance than the one that saw them scrape a 1-0 win over Wolves last Monday. However, they were once again well below expectation and this time there was no Raphael Varane winner to spare their blushes.

Instead, there was a Pape Matar Sarr strike early on in the second half followed by a Lisandro Martinez own goal that ensured the result was beyond any doubt with more than 15 minutes still to play. United started brightly, but soon faded and Spurs were worthy winners. Ange Postecoglou's men may be left feeling that they could have won by more than two goals.

After the game, Keane was particularly brutal when discussing United's display. The Irishman told Sky Sports: "Well I think Man United are the new Spurs, desperate. Absolutely desperate. The biggest insult I always think about it are teams that can't do it away from home or players who aren't up for it away from home.

"They're a good team, they fancy it when their fans are in front of them, they got that support and that energy and United go away today - second half, weak, no leadership, gave bad goals away. Spurs were lovely, all credit to Spurs but United, it's easy to play against United.

"I said before the game, they were poor against Wolves but they got the result and they will be better today - they weren't. They were fine for the first half hour but the game is about 90 minutes , and I know you are not going to dominate for that long, but you have to show some belief and desire and fight."

Even after such damaging punditry aimed at his old side, Keane still had more to come and perhaps left his most brutal put-down for misfiring forward Anthony Martial.

"They are bringing on the likes of (Anthony) Martial, you might as well bring on Frank Stapleton and Norman Whiteside - Martial is not going to get you out of trouble!"

Unfortunately for the French forward, Keane wasn't the only United legend to pick out Martial for criticism, despite the fact that former Monaco man played less than 15 minutes.

Gary Neville poked fun at the 27-year-old while on commentary duty as the game drew to a close, pondering: "How long was Anthony Martial's contract. He has been here forever. It's like groundhog day."

The comment sparked significant backlash among angry United fans who felt Neville was unfairly targeting Martial.
