A 1950s nuclear bunker near Buxton in the Peak District is hitting the market. It offers stunning views and a cozy atmosphere, featuring a log burner and rug for a snug feel.

A "homely" nuclear bunker with a log burner and picturesque views has sparked plenty of interest after going on the market for a bargain price.

The Royal Observer Corps’ bunker is one of just 1,500 built in the 1950s and it’s buried 14 feet underground in the village of Wormhill near Buxton on the edge of the Peak District. It is described as being ’in excellent condition, clean and dry’ along with some ’interesting original items’ that still remain - and an ’unused toilet’.

SDL Property Auctions are advertising the property for sale on Rightmove with a guide price of £15,000, with the bunker set to go to an online auction on September 26. The listing reads: "Fantastic opportunity to buy a piece of past war British history. The once in a generation opportunity is to buy a ROC Nuclear Bunker otherwise known as A Royal Observer post."

It continues: "This particular site was one of many built in the 1950s and was designed to provide protective accommodation for three observers to survive a nuclear attack, they were expected to report on the nuclear bursts and on the fall out of a nuclear attack. They were provided with enough food and water for fourteen days and had a landline and radio communications available to them.

"Most of these sites were decommissioned and sold off in 1993 and we have been informed that many were bought up by telecom companies and now are sites for mobile phone masts as they were built as telecommunication posts so they are positioned in very favourable locations."

Pictures taken from inside the bunker show a bedroom with curtains draped on the walls and a yellow crushed velvet duvet which still remains. There is also a log burner and a rug. The sleeping area spans 14 feet by 7 feet while the storage area is 7 feet by 2 feet, reported the Manchester Evening News.

SDL Property Auctions adds: "The bunker is secure, dry and in its original condition, the current owner has refurbished and decorated it in readiness for its new owner. There are wall to wall velvet curtains, a cream carpet, a made bed, a log burner, storage and even a rug to make it as homely as possible.

"The owner has advised there is an unused and still boxed chemical toilet, they also recommend for the wood burning stove to be serviced before being used due to safety purposes. Viewings are available but also click on the virtual tour to watch our National Valuer Jims video with commentary too."

It is no surprise that the bunker has attracted attention online on Reddit The property was shared onto the Reddit community SpottedonRightmove, which has 252,000 members. One user @iosGaymer shared the Rightmove listing and began a thread which read: "Anyone fancy a nuclear bunker.. y’know, just in case...". Another Reddit user @KingofCalais responded: "Not even close to big enough to be of any real use unfortunately," as @OJay23 said: "The pictures are one thing, but the key features really sell it. They had me at "Unused Chemical Toilet."
