Leeds United and United States star Tyler Adams suffered the bitter disappointment of a dream move to Chelsea collapsing after the Blues' blockbuster double swoop for Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, but there is light at the end of the tunnel for the 24-year-old.

The United States Men's National Team captain had travelled to London for a medical on Friday after the Stamford Bridge club agreed to trigger a £20million release clause, only to pull out of the deal at the last minute after breakthroughs in their pursuits of Brighton & Hove Albion standout Caicedo and Southampton talent Lavia.

Chelsea's spending spree under American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital is set to continue with fees in the region of £110million and £55million to be paid for Caicedo and Lavia respectively, but Adams – who is nursing a hamstring injury and is ruled out until at least mid-September – has been left disappointed.

However, according to The Athletic, Adams' frustration could be short-lived, with other top Premier League clubs "alerted" to the player's availability after the breakdown of his move to Chelsea.

No suitors have been named, but midfielder Adams could fit the profile Manchester United are pursuing, with Fiorentina's Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat known to be on their radar after the sale of Fred to Fenerbahce.

Liverpool are also sure to be in the market for midfield reinforcements in the closing weeks of the window, with the Reds' pursuits of Caicedo and Lavia set to come up short, compounding the disappointment of unexpectedly losing stalwarts Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to the allure of Saudi Arabian riches.

Adams played 24 times for Leeds last season as the club slipped out of the Premier League, but he is likely to remain in the top flight due to the release clause that became active due to the club's relegation.

The 36-cap United States international captained his country at the World Cup in Qatar last year and he has reportedly been tracked by Aston Villa, Brighton, Nottingham Forest and West Ham United due to his defensive strengths in the middle of the park.

Adams is not the only Leeds star heading towards the Elland Road exit this summer, with Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto missing Saturday's defeat at Birmingham City amid interest from Everton.

Gnonto played in the season-opening 2-2 draw with Cardiff City but missed the Carabao Cup win over Shrewsbury Town in midweek after being told he will not be sold this summer.

He also made himself unavailable for the last-gasp defeat at St Andrews, before which Leeds issued a statement on the "internal disciplinary matter".

It read: "Despite training for the last two days, Willy has informed Daniel Farke that he still does not feel able to play this weekend and has not travelled to Birmingham for the game tomorrow."
