Kourtney Kardashian slammed for 'insensitive' comment during Hawaii fires

Kourtney Kardashian has been criticised for her "insensitive" comment amid the raging wildfires plaguing the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Thousands of residents and tourists on the resort island have been evacuated while the death toll is at 55 and expected to increase amid the scorching bushfires that broke out on Tuesday. And it appeared that the eldest Kardashian was unaware of the events not too far from her as she enjoyed a few days in Montecito, California, with her husband, Travis Barker.

"The ocean calms the fire in me," the pregnant 44-year-old captioned a set of images in which she was seen soaking up the sunshine while showing off her blossoming bump. Kourtney also shared snaps of the beach, an epic ocean view from her hotel room, and photos of the delicious lunches and dinners she was enjoying.

The reality star seemed unaware that in Maui, many people were fighting for their life due to fires, and her followers were sure to let her know. One person wrote: "Maybe not the best time to say the ocean calms the fire - when people in Hawaii were forced into the ocean because of a fire. Wish that Ocean would calm the fires on Maui."

Another said: "So insensitive to the people on Maui" while a second added: "That's a really inappropiate caption, jeeez." A fourth acknowledged: "Terrible timing for a terrible caption."

The death toll in Maui is currently at 55 and expected to rise, with horror scenes showing various people jumping into the ocean to avoid the scorching brush fires that broke out on Tuesday on the resort island.

The wind-driven conflagration swept into the area with alarming speed and ferocity, blazing through intersections and leaping across wooden buildings in the Lahaina town centre, which dates to the 1700s and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The historic town of Lahaina had 271 of its buildings damaged or destroyed.

US President Joe Biden said the government would be providing "all available federal assets" to help combat the fires. The Coast Guard, Navy and Marines are deploying helicopters to fight the flames, too.
