The New Orleans Saints could be about to sign Kareem Hunt after losing Alvin Kamara for the first month of the season.

Kamara has been suspended by the NFL for violating the league’s personal-conduct policy, after he was arrested in February 2022 following an alleged incident in Las Vegas. Kamara had pleaded no contest to a misdemeanour charge of breach of peace last month and was ordered to pay £82,500 in restitution to the victim.

And with the Saints also hit by an injury to Eno Benjamin, they are seeking options to bolster the running back room. Kamara will miss games against the Tennessee Titans, Carolina Panthers, and the Green Bay Packers - leaving them without their lead back, and they look set to turn to Hunt.

Hunt led the league in rushing yards in his rookie year with the Kansas City Chiefs, but was cut from the team the following year after being involved in a domestic violence incident in 2018.

Hunt has spent the past four years as a back-up running back behind Nick Chubb with the Cleveland Browns, where he was still performing at a high level.

After leaving the Browns this offseason, Hunt has surprisingly yet to find a new home. With teams now a week into training camp, and injuries starting to hit, he is set to visit with the Saints this week.

Although the Saints will miss Kamara, they added the league's touchdown leader from last season, signing Jamaal Williams who scored 17 times with 1000 rushing yards. As well as Williams, they used a third-round pick on Kendre Miller from TCU, who many expect to be a starting calibre player.

The Saints having Hunt in to visit might suggest their game-plan this season, looking to run the football more often while signing Derek Carr as their new starting quarterback.

The former Raiders quarterback initially held talks with the Saints while still under contract with the Las Vegas Raiders, but refused to negotiate as part of any compensation package in a trade before signing as a free agent.

Carr also visited the New York Jets and there was reported interest from both the Carolina Panthers and the Atlanta Falcons.

After being paid a a four-year deal $150million (£125m) deal, Carr will be the starter for the foreseeable future with Jameis Winston remaining on the roster as a back-up.
