NFL player Josh Sills has been indicted on rape and kidnapping charges just days before he is due to play for the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

The Ohio Attorney General's office confirmed the indictment on Wednesday. Offensive lineman Sills was indicted by a grand jury this week, and is due to appear in court on February 16 - four days after the Super Bowl in Arizona.

Sills made his debut for the Eagles on October 9 this season, having signed for them as an undrafted free agent. He played against the Arizona Cardinals on October 9, but didn't play again this season. The charges relate to an alleged incident in December 2019, before Sills entered the NFL.

The indictment claims Sills engaged in sexual activity that was not consensual and held an alleged victim against her will.

The Philadelphia Eagles have not yet commented on the indictment at this stage.

The Eagles booked their place in the Super Bowl by beating the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an injury early in the first quarter, and the offense never recovered from him exiting the game.

Sills did not play in the NFC Championship game, or in any post-season games. The Eagles defeated the New York Giants in the NFL Divisional Round before advancing to face the 49ers.

They will now head to Arizona to play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, aiming to win the sport's ultimate prize for the second time in their history.
