Meghan Markle and Prince Harry could be on to a winner as they're reportedly set to produce a new film for Netflix.

The movie, based on the bestselling novel Meet Me at the Lake, is thought to be getting produced by the couple as part of their $112million (£87.7million) deal with the streaming service. Meghan and Harry are said to have spent $3.8million (£3million) to secure the rights to the film.

The book has proven to be a hit with readers, selling 37,000 copies in its first week alone. PR expert Mayah Riaz believes this success could also be emulated for the Sussexes.

Speaking exclusively to The Mirror, she said: "Harry and Meghan are no strangers to attracting millions of eyes upon what they do and this will be no different. I believe the film could hit record number in the first week at the box office."

The PR to the stars believes Harry and Meghan will undoubtedly be able to attract a big audience to the film. She said: "Everyone will be talking about it for weeks leading up to the release as well as afterwards. It might not beat the record of Barbie at the box office but I believe it could come very close second to it."

The novel focuses on a couple who fall in love in their 30s and deals with themes of childhood trauma and post-natal depression. One of the big plot points is the death of a parent in a car crash.

Mayah believes this could offer fans of the couple a "better understanding" of their Harry's personal experiences. The Duke of Sussex was just 12 years old when his mother Princess Diana died in the same circumstances at the age of 36 in 1997.

She said: "The parent passing in a car crash and mental health scenes within the book play a huge part as to why Harry and Meghan have picked this particular project as their first producing roles. It's something important to them and we may be able to get a better understanding of what Harry might have gone through."

The film is said to be the next stage of the couple's deal with Netflix. Meghan and Harry have a great working relationship with the streaming service, with a spokesman for Netflix saying: "The bond with Archewell Productions is one we deeply value.

"Harry & Meghan launched as Netflix's most spectacular documentary debut to date. Our exciting journey with them isn't ending anytime soon.

"We're currently collaborating on numerous projects, including the much-anticipated documentary series Heart of Invictus." The Heart of Invictus series is due to air on the streaming service this month.
