Princess Diana regularly took her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, out on Saturday - but the reason for their outing often left the palace shocked.

Diana wanted her sons to experience some normality outside the palace walls and often on Saturdays she would take them out for a McDonald's. And while the boys loved their regular trips to grab a Big Mac, the Kensington chef was a bit shocked and often told Diana he could make burgers for Harry and William at home.

But Diana told royal chef Darren McGrady that the kids did not just want a Big Mac, but were excited about the toy they would get with their meal. Diana's butler added that after having their McDonald's meal, the princess and her children would come home to watch Blind Date all together.

Speaking to Marie Claire, the chef said: "I remember the Princess came into the kitchen one day and said, 'Cancel lunch for the boys I'm taking them out, we're going to McDonald's.' And I said, 'Oh my god your royal highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.'

"And she said, 'No, it's the toy they want.' Yeah, the boys loved McDonald's, and going out to pizza, and having potato skins—sort of the American foods. They were royal princes but had children's palates." And the visit was not a one-off, with Diana's former butler and close friend Paul Burrell explaining that it was part of the trio's normal Saturday night routine.

He told the Mirror: "They would then come home and sit on a giant stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in front of the TV and watch Blind Date. The three of them would nip to McDonald's for a Big Mac and fries before coming back to watch Blind Date. All three of them would squat on this massive, stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in her sitting room. They loved Blind Date and I'd hear them all screaming things like 'Oh don't pick him!' and 'Lorra, lorra fun'."

Earlier this year, we reported that documents found on Diana's desk on the day of her tragic death revealed that she had considered moving to North America after her divorce from Prince Charles, as she was in the process of purchasing a home in Malibu, California, US. It is reported that she intended to take William and Harry there for several weeks each year, with an aim to expose them to a different culture and provide them with a unique perspective on life.

Diana's former butler, Mr Burrell, confirmed her plans during an episode of Loose Women in November 2019. The butler explained: "Diana was also deciding to spend some of her time in America. In fact, the day she died, on her desk were plans of a home in Malibu in California, which she was in the process of purchasing." He added: "She was going to take William and Harry for three, four weeks every year to America to give them a different culture, to give them a different insight into life."
