Jesus Alberto Lopez Ortiz, an amateur footballer and father of two, died after being attacked by a crocodile in a devastating incident in Costa Rica.

The incident occurred when Lopez jumped into the Rio Canas river to cool off from the tropical heat. Shocking footage captured the moment when the reptile grabbed his body in its jaws, ultimately leading to his tragic demise.

Lopez, also known as "Chucho," was a 29-year-old player for the amateur club Deportivo Rio Canas. His family, devastated by the incident which happened on Saturday, has appealed to the public for assistance in covering the funeral costs.

The club's manager, Luis Carlos Montes, is also organising a collection to support the grieving family. A statement released by the club read: “With deep sorrow we make public the death of our player Jesús López Ortiz that God enjoys. Rest in peace, Chucho - we join the pain of all his family.”

Another statement added: "Good morning, people of Rio Cañas, neighbours, we hereby inform you that a simple number has been enabled to be able to help the family of Jesus Lopez 'Chucho' for what unfortunate has happened today, who wishes to collaborate please make your help at [number redacted] in the name of Luis Carlos Montes, also if your aid is physical, whether it is groceries or some other type of help, you can go leave it at the house of Don Daniel Serrano, Doña Tica will be receiving every help that comes out of her heart. Thank you so much in advance. God bless you."

Costa Rica has strict regulations against hunting or killing protected animals, including crocodiles, reports the Express US. However, local police claimed that they had permission under wildlife laws to free Lopez's body from the reptile's jaws, resulting in the crocodile's death.

The statement issued by the police said: “It should be clarified that all efforts were made to rescue the body of the deceased person without causing damage to the reptile, which was not possible.”

Despite efforts to rescue the victim without harming the animal, it was ultimately necessary to kill the crocodile. Crocodile attacks are not uncommon in Costa Rica.

In a similar incident last November, an eight-year-old boy named Julio Otero Fernandez was decapitated by a crocodile during a fishing trip with his family. The predator was later tracked down and killed by a hunter.

The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife in certain areas and highlights the need for caution when venturing into natural habitats. While Costa Rica is known for its rich biodiversity and stunning landscapes, it is important for residents and visitors alike to be aware of potential risks and take appropriate safety measures.
