Thai fugitive arrested after hacking police database to erase criminal record
A fugitive has been arrested in Thailand after hacking into a police database in an attempt to delete his criminal record, cyber-crime investigators said.
As reported by The Telegraph, police said Sahachart Chuaybamrung, 26, had taught himself advanced computer skills using AI chatbots to break into the Royal Thai Police systems.
He tried to delete five outstanding warrants before his arrest on Saturday, when police found methamphetamine pills and an unregistered gun, Thailand’s cyber crime investigation bureau (CCIB) said.
Mr Chuaybamrung left school at the age of 12 and accumulated several arrest warrants related to robbery and fraud.
After an alleged robbery in Nakhon Si Thammarat in southern Thailand, he fled to the Thai-Myanmar border and went into hiding. He taught himself advanced hacking skills using AI chatbots in the hope of wiping his criminal record.
Vulnerable computer systems targeted
Police traced him to an apartment in Phuket, where they found 80 methamphetamine pills, a .380-calibre semi-automatic handgun with ammunition, four mobile phones and several computers.
Mr Chuaybamrung is charged with various offences under Thailand’s Computer Crime Act, as well as illegal possession of a gun, possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, and drug use.
The CCIB said the investigation was continuing while they analysed his devices.
