Over half of holidaymakers (53%) now go on more staycations than trips abroad – with Cornwall voted the top family-friendly destination to travel to within the UK, a survey has found.

The popular south-western holiday spot was followed by the Lake District – which just pipped Cornwall to the top spot in terms of value for money – and Devon.

Meanwhile Edinburgh, York, Manchester, and Liverpool, all made the top 10 favourite staycation spots for those looking for a holiday closer to home.

And London, which ranked fourth on the list, was named the best city for activities and attractions, followed by Bath and Manchester – as 68% of parents, with kids up to the age of 18, seek out educational places to visit, that their little ones will enjoy and find interesting.

Meanwhile, a beach or pool is a top consideration, for 45% of the 2,000 parents polled – who won't take the kids anywhere where there isn't pool or sea access within a 10 mile radius.

The research was commissioned by Premier Inn, and found that parents will spend an average of £142 on a typical day out – whether it's to the beach, or on attractions.

Following the findings, the hotel group has created a new map to help you find the most exciting attractions at a convenient half-way point when meeting friends and family, in a bid to make the school summer holidays easier.

A spokesman for Premier Inn said: “With so many amazing places to visit in the UK this summer, we're happy to give parents some inspiration ahead of the upcoming school holidays.

“It can be hard choosing the right places that are suitable for everyone, which is why it’s great that a lot of these places are just a car journey away.

“Not only do staycations promote relaxation and rejuvenation, but they also empower us to support our local communities, and appreciate the wonders that lie just beyond our own front doors.

“So, let's embark on a journey of exploration, right where we are, and unlock the glorious sights of our home sweet home.”

Meanwhile, nearly half (48%) of the parents surveyed said affordable accommodation options in a destination are important when it comes to planning the perfect staycation – while a good mix of restaurants and cafes (47%), and free or cheap days out (44%), also scored highly.

And two-thirds of those polled, via OnePoll.com, claimed free days out in the place they are visiting is a decision-maker when it comes to planning their staycation.

The spokesman for Premier Inn added: “As we embrace the essence of home and the beauty it holds, we proudly advocate for the magic of staycations.

“In a world that moves at lightning speed, staycations offer a serene escape right at our doorstep, allowing us to rediscover the treasures within our own backyard.
