Manchester United fans were left stunned by the decision to send off Dan Gore during their full-blooded pre-season game against Wrexham in San Diego.

Gore, 18, was given his marching orders after a late challenge on Andy Cannon in the 48th minute of the Red Devils' 3-1 defeat at Snapdragon Stadium. The midfielder, who only signed a new United contract two days' ago, went into a tackle with his studs slightly raised and caught Cannon just above the ankle.

Many United supporters were in disbelief about the decision to give Gore a red card. One said on Twitter : "Baffling decision." Meanwhile, another added: "Ludicrous to send Gore off when the Wrexham player looked to have gone over the ball himself! Think the ref is trying to atone for not sending Bishop off. Dan very unfortunate there."

This wasn't the first contentious decision during the match after Nathan Bishop was arguably fortunate to get away with not being shown a red card for his challenge on Paul Mullin. The United goalkeeper clattered into the Wrexham striker just outside the area when both were making an attempt to get the ball.

However, Bishop completely mistimed his efforts to clear and instead hit Mullin at full force, catching the 28-year-old around the rib area. Bishop was handed a yellow card for the tackle, but commentators admitted he may have been sent off if it was a competitive game.

Mullin stayed on the floor for around seven minutes before sitting up and being handed an oxygen mask. A stretcher and a cart were sent out to the forward, but he opted to walk off the field with assistance from the medics and was sent to straight to hospital, with Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson later confirming he suffered a punctured lung.

Fans inside the stadium made their feelings known to Bishop after the incident. He was booed loudly the next few times he touched the ball as the San Diego crowd showed their love for Mullin and Wrexham. To make matters worse, Bishop had to pick the ball out of his net twice during his time on the pitch.

Before being replaced at half-time, Bishop was beaten by Elliot Lee and Aaron Hayden as they handed Wrexham an excellent start in their latest pre-season outing. The Red Devils pulled one back just before the break through Marc Jurado, but United's task of getting back into the contest was made harder by Gore's dismissal.

Wrexham restored their two-goal cushion with 20 minutes to go when Sam Dalby converted, and that proved to be the final strike to end a full-blooded encounter between the two teams. The win is the Red Dragons' second in a row in the United States after they beat LA Galaxy II on Sunday.

As for United, Erik ten Hag fielded a young side for the fixture with many gaining much-needed minutes and experience against a side full of experienced and senior professionals. Evans was the only player over the age of 23 after the ex-Leicester defender signed a contract to feature in pre-season.
