Split has kilometres of stunning beaches ranging from sandy spots popular with sunbathers to rocky shores shaded by hillsides.

3. The amazing culinary scene

The wonderful Split cuisine is served up in family-run restaurants known as Konoba and local dishes include octopus baked under a Peka (a dome-shaped lid) or spit-roasted meat.

The Mussels Alla Buzzara might also tempt you - a delicious seafood stew with olive oil, garlic and white wine. Then there's the Dalmatian speciality dish; the famous Pašticada, a flavoursome beef stew usually served with home-made gnocchi.

Die-hard foodies will enjoy a trip to the bustling fish market or the green market which sells fresh, locally-sourced fruit and vegetables.
