A schoolgirl was rushed to hospital during a routine trip to the dentist where tests showed she had a mass on her bone.

Millie Kelly, 11, went to see the teeth expert when she experienced pain in her jaw and a lump in her mouth which they feared was a tooth pushing through.

Millie was sent to Alder Hey hospital where tests showed she had a mass in her bone.

She was later diagnosed with an autoimmune disease causing inflammation of the bone.

Medication has helped since the diagnosis, but Millie is still under the care of Alder Hey and needs a full body MRI to ensure it is not showing anywhere else.

Mum Nikki told the Liverpool Echo : "It was only a small lump at first but then as time went on it was getting bigger and we thought surely it can't be her tooth.

“When she had the x-ray we realised it wasn't.

"We took her straight to the dentist because it had just swollen up and we were worried it could have been an infection but it was this rare disease instead.

"We were back and forth to the hospital and she saw a lot of children and decided it would be a nice thing to help and give back because they were absolutely fantastic, they've been quick and really caring.”

Young Millie wanted to give back to the hospital and other sick children and last weekend she and her parents walked up Mount Snowdon in poor weather conditions and raised more than £1,300 for the hospital.

Nikki added: “At 2am on Saturday morning we decided to go to see the sunrise but the weather changed which is typical for us and we ended up getting drenched and looked like we had swam in a lake.

“As soon as we got to the bottom the sun came out but she did really well and she powered through."
