A wheelie bin rolling down a road with tremendous speed nearly smashes into a man in a video which has gone viral on social media.

The footage captures the moment when the lid of the bin flips open, propelling it towards an unsuspecting man who is walking on the other side of the street.

The person filming the scene can be heard shouting a warning to the passerby. Within seconds, the bin whizzes past the man, narrowly missing him by inches.

The bin then tumbles over and skids along the ground before coming to a stop.

The incident occurred during a sudden cold snap at a residential complex in Las Vegas, Nevada, US, where strong winds of up to 40mph were reported by the National Weather Service (NWS).

The original poster responded by confirming that the weather had indeed been quite chaotic, but it had since cleared up and become sunny and calm.

The incident occurred during a winter storm that brought snow to Las Vegas on Valentine's Day.

Las Vegas Airport reported snowfall for the first time since records began in 1937, and the NWS reported strong gusts of wind up to 40mph.

Despite the chaos caused by the weather, the incident with the wheelie bin, fortunately, did not result in any harm to the passerby.

Las Vegas-based meteorologist Justin Bruce of KTNV re-tweeted a video of wheelie bins tossed on the street and commented: "Tough day for trashcans in Las Vegas due to the wind!"

Mr Bruce said that gusts of 50mph were knocking out street lights in the city and urged locals to "Treat them as a four-way stop, please!"

He said: "It dropped 15C in 15 minutes at Harry Reid International Airport between 11:05 to 11:20 a.m. From 54° to 39° as northwest gusts hit 49 mph!"
