Britain is a nation falling terrifyingly deeper into debt and hardship.

A colossal two million UK households missed or defaulted on a payment last month.

'Cost of living is one reason why Rishi Sunak suffered a drubbing in the local elections'

The findings by an authoritative consumer group show the result of high inflation outstripping wages, as everything from food and energy to rents and mortgages goes up.

The Tories are a large part of the problem, failing to help those struggling to keep their heads above water. They refused to act decisively in the interests of families, and voters will not forget.

And when later this year the Tories boast that inflation is finally falling, they’ll deserve no credit. Inflation is forecast to dip anyway, as the impact of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine finally begins to lessen.

Sickening duo

Two of the most notorious paedophiles in recent history, Jimmy Savile and Rolf Harris, were hiding in plain sight.

Chilling film uncovered of the vile pair discussing young women on TV is stomach churning now the terrible crimes of these two sexual predators is public knowledge.

Savile escaped justice by dying before the horrific extent of his crimes was exposed but Harris was jailed, and we commend the courage of survivors who spoke out.

We must never forget that targets were disbelieved, and in future make sure victims receive justice and the guilty are punished.

A diary date

With surveys finding volunteering is declining, making the Big Help Out an annual tradition might buck that trend.

We Britons are generous with our time but when we also live increasingly busy lives, a scheduled event would let us give even more.
