James Corden admitted he is terrified as he prepares to leave his hit US chat show.

The 44-year-old will bow out from the Late Late Show next Thursday after eight years in the hot seat.

He said he has “never felt this scared” in his professional life.

But insisted he stands by his return to England to raise his family.

Corden added: “I am certain this is the most overwhelming year of my life professionally.

“My agent puts up with nothing but sh** from me on the phone. I have never felt this scared since I decided to take the show to move here.

“So I have to embrace that feeling because I think to be excited and scared is probably the right place to make something quite interesting.”

He said it is an unnatural feeling to walk away from something you love so much.

Corden explained: “It is not right because you are having such a great time. I get to go to work with all of my best friends and my job is to be creative every day.

“But then, at the same time, I am certain it is the right thing to do.”

The dad-of-three will wait until the end of the school year before bringing his children back to Britain.

He said he is terrified of being unemployed but admitted he will not jump into his first offer. Although the Gavin & Stacey star is unsure how many jobs will be available in the UK, he said he will take a rest when he returns home.

He added: “I will try and embrace some silence because it has been really loud for eight years, and really focus on trying to make the change to move home as smooth as I can for my children and wife.

“I cannot begin to comprehend what this eight years has done to me and how changed I am.”

His CBS show became a hit due to sketches such as Carpool Karaoke, where he and stars including Adele and Paul McCartney would sing their tunes while Corden was driving.

Top Gun legend Tom Cruise also taught the presenter how to fly a fighter jet last year.

Corden recalled how his first few months setting up the Late Late Show made him feel like a failure given he was unknown in Hollywood circles.

At TV festival PaleyFest in Los Angeles, he said: “I was certain in its failing and that is not because we are making something bad. I thought how can this work?”
