Elden Ring's Ray Tracing update has brought further horrors to The Lands Between

A brand new update has been released for Elden Ring featuring a host of bug fixes. Also included was the inclusion of Ray Tracing, which apparently introduced a selection of issues of its own.

Elden Ring was already a looker when it launched last February, but it’s about to look even better as FromSoftware has finally added Ray Tracing to the game just over a year later. Due to the extra power needed for Ray Tracing, this feature is exclusive to the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, meaning Xbox Series S, Xbox One and PS4 players are sadly out of luck.

This news is surely going to give players another reason to jump back into the award-winning RPG ahead of the Elden Ring DLC titled 'Shadow of the Erdtree', which was announced earlier this year. Bandai Namco announced the details of the new patch on its website earlier today alongside the latest patch notes, which detailed bug fixes and balance adjustments to the game’s single-player and PvP modes.

Ray Tracing in Elden Ring has been rumoured since last October when Twitter data miner @sennoutantei (via Lance McDonald ) found menu strings relating to it in the version 1.07 update.

Arise Ye Tarnished

Long-time FromSoftware fans such as myself who remember the original PC ports of Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 will know the studio doesn’t exactly have the best record in the technical department. The first game was ripe with all-around terrible performance, so much so that the DSfix mod was basically required to have a good experience with the PC version. Dark Souls 2 fared a bit better, except for a bug that made the game exponentially harder. The bug caused weapons to break faster if you played the game at 60fps, and wasn’t fixed until over a year after its release.

Thankfully things have gotten better since then with Sekiro and Elden Ring’s PC versions being generally painless, but sadly it seems that this upgrade hasn’t gone down the smoothest with PC players on a Reddit thread discussing the patch. With the main complaints being focused on the lack of support for Nvidia’s DLSS technology and AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).

One user said “Looks like I won't be using Raytracing. From comparison screenshots it looks like there's barely any difference either way, except that it halves your fps”. This was the top comment in the thread too so clearly their thoughts are shared among the community. Another user posted their experience with a top-of-the-line Nvidia RTX 4080 with their resolution lowered to 1080p and still concluded that “ray tracing disappoints. FPS loss is painfull[sic] and difference is hard to notice”.

It's a shame that this new update seems to be a disappointment; especially after it took so long after launch to arrive. I’m personally a framerate-over-visuals person anyway – especially in reaction-heavy action games like Elden Ring. Thankfully the base game was already gorgeous thanks to its strong art design, but hopefully, FromSoftware can get this sorted in time for the DLC.
