We are living real-life episode of Blackadder, says Baldrick star Tony Robinson

Her not-so-cunning plan crashed the economy, so of course, the UK’s shortest serving PM Liz Truss would be ripe for a Blackadder parody.

Especially since her former deputy, Therese Coffey, gave turnips some good PR, too, during our salad shortage.

“Baldrick thinks Liz Truss is the finest Prime Minister we’ve ever had,” laughs Sir Tony Robinson, following turnip-enthusiast Baldrick’s return to screens during Comic Relief last week.

Alas, poor Baldrick might never meet his idol, as Sir Tony notes: “It would be impossible to do a series of Blackadder set in contemporary England right now, as one is playing out before our eyes.”

The return was greeted with such warmth, Sir Tony says he has been “in happiness soup” for the past few weeks, presumably root vegetable flavour.

He says there are “no plans” for a new series, adding: “If those things do come back, it ought to be as a present to our understanding of the enterprise.”

Sir Tony tests out his Blackadder knowledge in his new podcast Tony Robinson’s Cunningcast, which starts today with Miriam Margolyes recalling how “kind and fun” life was on set.
